Note: This thread is not for discussing games that never made it to your particular region, but only for games that were never "officially" released and/or were cancelled.  (In example, talking about BS Zelda, the original N64 Animal Crossing or Sin & Punishment--which is actually released for the virtual console on the Wii--would be inappropriate.)  No links to ROMs.

So what are your favorite games that were never officially released?  Of course, the two obvious answers to Nintendo fans would be Star Fox 2, and Earthbound 64.

I really love playing the Star Fox 2 BETA and comparing it to the original and Star Fox 64 (which is what it ultimately became), and I'd certainly recommend it to any Star Fox fan.  Earthbound 64 never really interested me.  Sure it would be fascinating to play through the e3 demo, but even what they had planned for the game wasn't as impressive as the press hyped it up to be.

A fun Nintendo64 game that I recently found a ROM for (and unfortunately, as far as I can tell, only the (E) region has been dumped) was 40 Winks.  Is it as fun as all the people on the emulation sites will tell you it is?  No.  Is it a "should-be classic"?  No.  But is it fun?  Yes, as any adventure fan who had it on the PlayStation will tell you.  I wouldn't put it in my top 10 of the N64... most of that is covered by Nintendo and Rare games, but it certainly is as good as 3rd party titles get for the N64.

And if you're a Rareware fan, like I am, you'll probably wish that we had a dump of Twelve Tales: Conker 64 and Dinosaur Planet.  I've gotta tell you, it would be nice to have another platformer, and apparently Conker 64 was just about finished when they decided to do a 180 and turn it into the M-rated "Conker's Bad Fur Day".

Dinosaur Planet would have been lovely... I don't know what it is about Rare's graphics on the Nintendo 64, but for some reason, it's even more appealing to me than the graphics in Star Fox Adventures.  It looked awesome, and I didn't care for Star Fox Adventures too much (for those of you who don't know: that's what it turned into), so it would be nice to see a ROM of the BETA.  Unfortunately, I think it's less likely that we'll get a dump from any of Rareware's titles than it is for us to be getting a dump of something from Nintendo.

Dinosaur Planet had some lovely mp3s released... you ought to check them out if you're a fan of what Rare did on the Nintendo 64.

So what about you guys?  What games have you played that were never "released", and which ones do you wish you *could* play?

Kirby Tilt n' Tumble 2 for the Gamecube. I loved the original on the Gameboy Color, and it would have been kick-ass to have a 3d one. :)

Yeah, probably the third Zelda Oracle game. And Star Fox 2, I guess. Dinosaur Planet would have been better than Star Fox Adventures, but otherwise I didn't really want it.

Other than those, most games I want get released :P.

"Starfox 2" and The third oracle game (the oracle games ruled) are the only ones  I can think of. I wish "Phantom Hourglass" had been a never released title does that count?

The Final Fantasy 6 remake for the N64.

Eventually made into a demo for some weird system that never got released either.
I remember seeing screenshots of Sabin, Edgar, and someone else in a 3-d battle which probably  became part of the FF7 battle system.

Metal Gear Solid 64. That's right, it was all set to happen man. And if it had gone through, I'm sure there would have been MGS2 and 3 on the Cube. Aw drat.

Damnit, you beat me to it >_>

But seriously, I'll say...the Sequel to Quest 64.  I loved the original.

I can't find the original link where I read it, but having found this second one pretty much confirms that it was at one time a possibility.

Thanks.

Other non-releases I'd like to gander at:
The WIP 3rd zelda for the nes
The WIP 2nd zelda for snes

Google around and you may just find out what I am talking about.

Quote
They didn't know it back in 1987, but Zelda 2 was going to be last Zelda game for the Famicom system. Although Sega's Master System posed no threat to the NES dominance in the '80s, Nintendo knew that it had to come up with something new to continue its console gaming reign in the future. With both NEC and Sega nipping at its heels, Nintendo was busy cooking up the Famicom's successor, a powerful console that it claimed would redefine gaming. Not just a puny little Famicom -- a Super Famicom. Whatever concepts were thrown around for a third NES Zelda game, they were quietly converted into an even bigger project for the Super Famicom: a full-fledged sequel to the original Legend of Zelda called The Legend of Zelda: Kamigami no Triforce (The Triforce of the Gods).

Foreshadower, there wasn't going to be a remake of FF6.  That was a program designed to teach Square game designers how to make games in 3d.

I'll agree with previous posts and say the third Oracle game.

Source please?

Everywhere else for the past decade has said otherwise and that it was dropped due to Square and Nintendo's dispute.
