Since this whole system is moving more towards game trailers now, I thought I'd post a list of programs that you can use to make trailers. All of these are free and legal, and I have tested all of them myself except Taksi, for which I have listed all necessary information.

Vidshot Capturer
Works with: All
Records sound: No
Reduces video quality: Yes
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: AVI
Other issues: Starts recording after it says it does - as a result, material from the beginning of the recording is lost. Output video displays a white space beside the recorded material.
Download: http://www.geovid.com/VidShot_Capturer/

Wink
Works with: All
Records sound: Yes
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: SWF
Other issues: Output swf is inconvertible.
Download: http://www.debugmode.com/wink/

AviScreen Classic
Works with: All
Records sound: No
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: Yes, but only up to 32 FPS
Format: AVI
Other issues: Requires some knowledge of video codecs.
Download: http://www.bobyte.com/AviScreen/index.asp

Fraps
Works with: OpenGL & DirectX games (GM6 and GM7 - not GM5 or below)
Records sound: No
Reduces video quality: No
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: AVI
Other issues: Output files are massive
Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=149

CamStudio
Works with: All
Records sound: Optional
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: AVI, SWF
Other issues: No longer supported. Also requires some knowledge of video codecs.
Download: http://www.brothersoft.com/Multimedia_Graphics_Screen_Capture_CamStudio_3944.html

AutoScreenRecorder Free
Works with: All
Records sound: No
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: No
Format: AVI
Other issues: May require some codec knowledge.
Download: http://www.newfreedownloads.com/Multimedia-Graphics/Video-Tools/AutoScreenRecorder.html

Taksi
Works with: Only DirectX games (GM6 and GM7 - not GM5 or below)
Records sound: No
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: AVI
Other issues: None
Download: http://taksi.sourceforge.net/

oRipa Screen Recorder
Works with: All
Records sound: Optional
Reduces video quality: Optional
Selectable frame rate: Yes
Format: AVI
Other issues: Records entire screen and does not allow screen or window selection. Output video would have to be somehow cropped.

I have only used Wink, Fraps, CamStudio, and AviScreen, but out of those, I would say Wink. Fraps doesn't work on everything, for example, it will capture GM6 games but not GM5 (because of the DirectX), CamStudio takes up lots of memory and will cause your computer to run slow, thus recording your computer running slow rather than fast, but it's good if you have enough memory. AviScreen is good but it doesn't record sound and it occasionally has problems with codecs. I use Wink because it records sound and is highly configurable, but it only exports in Flash format. (Although you may be able to convert Wink flash files to AVI using Swf2Avi, I haven't tried it yet.)

But it ain't free. I'd rather list *non*-illegal ways, thanks. :P

Oh, if anyone else has more, post them and I'll put 'em in the first post too for quick reference... or a mod might do it, if they're nice. :)

Oh, and guess what? I have a trick that I can do with SnagIt-- there's a glitch, that if used right, can get you high quality videos of any length, even when the trial is up. It's true!

PM me, and I'll tell it to you :).

Hint, hint :P. I have a quicker way :P.

all those programs mentioned seem to be for just recording the footage.
if you're going to make a game trailer, you're going to need to be able to edit the footage together into a trailer and then encode it :P

That's the point of this topic. It's really just so people can find good programs to do the trick, since a lot of people were using programs illegally or hadn't had any software to do it at all.
