This is a topic dedicated to a remake of MM that I am beginning.  I am using UDK as the game engine.  The whole idea of this project is really to bring MM to the new graphical age of today.  I had to choose between OoT and MM, but in the end I decided MM because I thought in terms of a game, it was much more beautiful and meaningful (not in just graphics).  I've learned a lot about the UDK in the last few months, primarily the art aspect.  Soon I'll learn unrealscript as well so that I can emulate the gameplay of MM and maybe even add a few things in (not likely other than to compensate for using a mouse and keyboard rather than a controller).

Here are some early screens:

Nearly everything in this scene is mine, and it is mostly material tests.  The only things not mine in that scene are the tree and grass. I made most of those objects before deciding to remake MM, so they aren't very relevant to the game truthfully.

However, I am beginning something quite relevant to the game in terms of modeling:

Just the boot right now, and I'm working out a basemesh to make a high poly out of.  Then I'll probably sculpt it some in Zbrush, retopologize, uv, bake, animate, and put in game. Right now the Link model is very WIP, as in I just started making it 5 minutes ago, heh.

Comments, criticisms?

It's an interesting look, and an interesting idea. You're just starting to learn the code so you can make the engine and such? Are you sure you aren't setting yourself up for a huge fall by starting really, really big. It's gonna be really hard to do all of this yourself.

It looks good so far, but Fissure has a point, big projects usually need big teams. Good luck!

I am very impressed with the idea behind this game, as well as the engine which you will be using. Though I must say like FISSURE said I am concerned about the fact that you are just beginning to learn with this, and therefore might be setting yourself up for a big fall.

However if you do manage to overcome this I will be most impressed, so keep impressing me.

Would love to see this. Just remember: if it looks too good or gets to popular, Nintendo will probably shut it down >_>

I'm not inexperienced with all code, just unrealscript.  And yes, I came from a previous community where big projects are looked down upon, but I figure I should just make as much as I can and have fun and in the end I will have some portfolio work to show off.

edit:

This also gives me an excuse to play the game all the way through again, lol.

Update:

Recognize this guy?

I placed two in the scene so you could get a better look.

Here's the high poly model:

Just don't forget that MM had a very colorful style, almost tribal-like, that I think would do more harm than good if lost in your remake.

That...wasn't Nintendo.  Nintendo hasn't really been known to shut down fan projects.  I'm pretty sure OOT2D appeared in an issue of Nintendo Power in Italy at one point.

You're right, I remember to search about OOT2D when I saw an article in a Nintendo World, I believe my brother still has the magazine xP

Nintendo has a strict no-emulation policy, including using their resources for fan material :P They don't hunt down games and shut them down though.

Nintendo's policy seems to be, if it isn't hugely popular, and isn't making itself really obvious, to leave it alone. I have seen them shut down only one piece of fan work before for Zelda and that was the Hero of Time movie, and they waited for it to be complete, released and then after a few days (when thousands of people had got a copy), closed it down.I would go as far as to say they want to encourage fan works, but stand to lose their trademarks due to legal reasons if they don't sotp it. So they simply wait until they would have no choice, and shut it down.

Of course, this is only my perspective.

Nintendo also shut down Graal Online for A Link to the Past similarities, which have since been addressed.

Yeah they don't really play around. They even go as far as *making up their own laws* when it comes to emulation and fan works. It's really kind of funny.

Indeed, it was Squeenix, they also shut down the CT sequel that was an edited CT rom. They gotta protect their property, even though they aren't doing !@#$% with it.
