I had a good idea for an avatar. And I need a GIF animator that's free and doesn't screw up the image. Any ideas?

GIMP comes to mind quickly. If memory serves when you try to export as a GIF (may need an additional plugin, not sure) you can export it as a GIF with each layer acting as a separate frame.

EDIT: Yeah, you can.

Gimp is best; but if you want something quick and simple (and a much smaller download), use UnFreeze.

The best, simplest GIF Animator that I have used would be MS GIF Animator.  If you can't find it with a search, then I'll go off looking for it for you, but really, it's simplistic.  The only thing that bugs me is setting transparencies for each individual sub-image which doesn't really take that long for simple animations; if it is big, I just go to gifworks.com to add a transparency in that way.
