Once long ago, there was a band of people. For crimes unknown, they were cast out from their tribe.
They were forced to live in the shadows and steal for sustenance.
When they were cast out, they were cursed. Every century, one male would be born.
However, at the time the curse was cast, there were many males within the exiles.
One by one, they started to die out for no apparent reason. One of them, a middle-aged one, noticed this.
His brothers were dying! He was outraged that the great goddesses would do this!
So he damned the goddesses and led the exiles back to the tribe that kicked them out.
He went to the elders of the tribe, sword drawn, ready to strike them down.
However, the elders kneeled down in prayer. The man hesitated for a second and was about to kill them...
All around him became gray as the goddesses sealed the land in a barrier of stone.
Then he turned to stone as well, frozen with arms raised, ready to strike the kneeling elders with his blade.
Frozen for all eternity. The land, the tribe, all became one with the stone in the ground.
All but one. A pregnant woman had been escaping and was in the midst of running.
She smelt sulfur and turned around to see her homeland turning to stone.
Horrified, she kept running as the ground turned to stone as well.
It was about to catch her when she crossed into the neighboring land of Hyrule. The petrification ended there.
That night, she found a vacant hut, and gave birth to a baby boy. And then she passed away.
In the morning, a passing couple heard the cries of a baby. They found the young boy with his dead mother.
The wife took the child and noticed a mark on his left hand, and the husband buried the mother.
They adopted the son as their own and named him Link.
That was ten years ago.

Wow, this is really impressive!
Im not sure if it was just my PC but a few things seemed a bit too slow for me, link and the octorocks both did. But Its looking really good, everything worked well. But this is one of the best engines I've seen, definatly.

Dang, the engine is really good and smooth. I like the feel of it alot. The only thing that needs improving is the speed of Link and his walking animations(they aren't consinstent, the up/down dont show Link moving as much as his left/right animations which really bugs me). Otherwise, its really good. BTW, whats it being made with?

very nice so far, very smooth overall.

a few faults though:
boomerang needs diagonal throwing (you probably already have this planned)
game needs an option for full screen (probably planned also)
the speed of the roll, I suppose it is more realistic that the roll isn't a constant speed, but the rolls main purpose is so the player can move faster, it's just pretty irritating that only the first half of the roll feels like it's faster than running.
And none of the tiling stood out to me, I don't know if these areas were just made for the demo, but they felt bland

Looking forward to more :)

anyways um i forgot about diagonal, i'll add it in.
and fulscreen looks great, gives it a really nice zelda feel.
the rolling is slower towards the end but it's not for moving to places faster, it's more to dodge. and it slows down at the end to keep the player from constantly rolling. which you clearly would have went nuts with, seeing how you wanna travel the world at amazing speeds. :P
yup your right, tiles are bland. should get better. and alot of the areas will be in game but just more tiles added, they were thrown down to test the room loading code.

I'm very impressed.

You've managed to create a Zelda engine that runs smoothly, has pretty decent collision, and a lot of aspects to it that most "walking demos" don't. I also really like that you have some neat, new things planned for this game - I liked being able to pick "use, display" etc. for items in the item menu. Cool stuff.

The effects you've added look pretty good, as well. I like the way the name of the area you are in is displayed when you enter it, and the "cutscene" thing that happens when you read text. All neat stuff.

Some suggestions:

Make the rolling constant. It's annoynig when it slows down, the whole point is to make you go faster.
Boomerang should travel further, diagonal, and pick up items.
Lifting/carrying needs work (the animations, I mean)
Some sprite offset errors/collision errors, those can be fixed easily.

I'm not going to judge the areas you've created, as this game is so early in development.

I highly await to see where you'll go with this. This engine has promise, unlike most of the things in this board. Don't let us down :D.

ha nice, I like the feeling I get when I read your post? "Don't let us down :D" how many people are at your computer.
and yes Boomerang, diagonal, has been added, and this one goes short because it's the first boomerang.
you said some there where some collision errors? any idea where they are?

If you can, use ogg files. They aren't as big as MIDIs and there are freeware programs that can convert MP3s and WAVs to OGG files. But Midis are a safe alternative. And they aren't all awful. I haveone for the FF4DS OW theme, and it sounds JUST LIKE the actual tune.

One more thing, it's just a personal preference, I think the jumping should be more "smooth" in the sense that Link doesn't just jump and randomly stop moving before he falls back to the ground.

Tokos, here's the intro-tized intro story.

Also, updates on this page; Tokos should update the first post tomorrow. The game's title is The Petrified Realm (I thought of that; reakates to the story of the game I wrote). The full intro story should be posted tomorrow, and the land's name might be Petrane (thanks Ryan; I pronounce it Peh-traw-nay); Tokos said he liked that one. Also, before you say PM HIM THAT!, I already told him I'd post the intro-tized text here.
