So, I was tinkering around in Golden Sun's memory in the hopes of finding some way of ripping it's gorgeous sprites.  It didn't take too long to find out how to replace the player's sprites with someone else's, and I made this video playing around with it

After figuring out that the data I was changing to switch characters was actually a pointer to a collection of pointers directly to the sprite data I started making huge progress with my goal until I finally cracked the data format.  When I began dumping all of the sprites from Golden Sun's sequel, The Lost Age, I came across a character I recognized, but not from Golden Sun.



There's no way they designed a character that similar to Link, and didn't actually use it in the game on accident.  No one else in Golden Sun has pointy ears like that either.

Maybe they were going to have a cameo...I dont remember bumping into a Link esc character when I played it...
Then again, I never beat either.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was Link. Some sort of cameo or easter egg.

You know, you really make me want to play Golden Sun Again...

Interesting cameo sprites there... This could of been done for sure.
(Please, no one try to use these for a fangame...)

First off, I'm impressed you have the knowledge to do that sort of thing.

Second off, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Link was in there as an easter egg of some kind. You should check some game hecking sites and see if any of them have any more info on this. If not, submit it to them. Good stuff.

Wow, I've never heard of this...  Unless you're doing this as a hoax, they definitely must have had a cameo planned.  I wonder why they didn't go through with it?  You definitely need to share this with different forums and such, I think this might be a new discovery.

This is no hoax, if you want a video I'll gladly record one.  Heck, here are the codes to switch your sprites with him yourself.

--VisualBoy Advance Codes--
If you have VisualBoy Advance you can put these in by going to Cheats > Cheat list... and clicking on the "Code..." button.  You can paste them all in at the same time.  It only works with The Lost Age, I don't believe his sprites are in the original Golden Sun.

I've noticed some graphical glitches as a result of these codes, but no major problems.  They don't change your sprites on the world map, in battles, or on the status screen.  Also, after entering a new area you may briefly change into a different character.


--Action Replay V3 Codes--
It's a lot longer than the VBA code because it also changes your sprites on the world map, and is adjusted to prevent a lot of the graphical glitches it otherwise causes.  The glitch where you change into a different character after entering a new area is still present though since it's directly related to changing your sprites.

For whatever reason though I smell a lawsuit from nintendo on that games production company XD

but seriously, I see a ton of Zelda fangames appearing with those sprites :P

They're the same company that works on games like Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf.  I doubt there'll be much of a problem.

I agree with this entire post.  A GS/LoZ crossover would be amazing, (though I don't know how it would work...at all).  I'd settle for a GS3 though.  I'm almost 100% sure they'll make another eventually, but I want one now.

The boulder part was the best. XD Just the irony of it. The Link thing is cool, too. Maybe it was a cameo. Nice job.
